In the work of maintaining social order, the fight against crime is one of the most important activities, and the criminal law is a tool for preventing crime and educating offenders. Since the early days of making the criminal law in Vietnam, the suspended sentences have been recognized and applied in practice. These suspended entences have created conditions for those who commit less serious crimes but have good nature and personalities. These suspended sentences also classify criminals to creat favorable conditions for the fight against crime. However, due to the difficulties of each period, Vietnam had not a completed Penal Code. This study analyzes the uspended sentence institutions, as well as other criminal legal institutions of Vietnam through different periods.
